Right now there are two plans in Congress to end the impasse on the debt ceiling.
There is one, authored by Senator Reid, that cuts discretionary spending but leaves entitlements intact. The other, being pushed by Speaker Boehner, is basically class warfare.
Speaker John Boehner and Republican leaders are insisting on his plan that will severely cut Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, while refusing to eliminate tax loopholes and subsidies for millionaires and prosperous corporations. Under the Boehner plan, the Congress would be forced to agree to egregious cuts to Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid within six months.
We also need to ensure the BBA (or balanced budget amendment) is not passed. It would balance the budget on the backs of the average American family.
We must stop both of these terrible pieces of legislation.
These members need to hear from their constituents before Wednesday's BBA vote and the vote on Boehner's debt plan on Thursday. To make sure you can get through, we ask you to call members' local offices because the Congressional switchboard in Washington has been jammed.
Please make your calls in the next 24 hours, and then click HERE to report your call.
Our Message to targeted House Members:
"I am calling to urge you to protect Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security and to support a balanced approach to the debt ceiling crisis that includes revenue. I urge you to oppose the Balanced Budget Amendment and to vote NO to Boehner's debt plan. "
Thanks for keeping up the fight to defend Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and other vital programs during this critical period for all of us.
